Why do they get all the small truck love? What can they do that an S-10 can not?
It must be that connection with Mazda.

Nah, because GM had Isuzu... oh, nevermind.

How many years ago did you author this post? I know you can delay posting to a later date, but this is a bit much. :)

I am not sure what you mean.

I was just kidding. The S-10 died in 2004. This seems like a conversation we would have had a decade or so ago.
In all seriousness, the Ranger was always curvier. Maybe that had something to do with it vs. the boxy S-10.

IMHO, the ranger always looked better. It held the proportions of a full size while the S10, at least in the first gen, looked like a Rabbit truck, or a Toyota pickup. Not only that, the Ranger seated at least 3 and carried a 4x8 sheet from the beginning. Other than that, it lasted longer. The Ranger didn't have a major redesign from 1993 to 2011, whereas the S10 stopped production in 2004, and started with the Mid sized Colorado, which with no 6 cylinder option, had lost Chevy a lot of customs. Don't get my wrong though, I am a Chevy guy, but the Ranger is a damn good package that lasted a long time.

Because the Ranger still lives, just not on these shores. The S-10 died, and so is forgotten.
"Small trucks" conversations in the US always mention the Ranger because it was the straw that broke the camel's back. All vehicles had progressively gotten larger, even the F-150, but small truck buyers still had a small vehicle in the old Ranger and related vehicles, the Colorado/Tacoma/Titan being its final competitors. It was still selling, and got very vocal support when news came down that Ford was killing it, but then the deathblow was the announcement of the global Ranger. That got people pissed that Ford would abandon the segment at home and then display a very nice truck for 180 countries not named "United States of America". People still want smaller-than-fullsize trucks; people who buy trucks can be insanely loyal and may not want a Colorado, Tacoma, or Titan; and people are irate that Ford in particular ignores them.
The S-10 died before all this happened. So it's not typically mentioned.

Because it died a tragic early death it is forgotten? That's cold.

The S10 still lives! It's known as colorado in some countries, but in South America it's known as the S10. And it's a great truck!
...but not as good as the Ranger.
...or the Amarok
...or the Hilux (better looking than this one, though. Hilux went downhill after the facelift.)
It's better than the L200, though (unless it's a L200 Savana).

Hm, today I learned. Not that it changes the perspective of US truck buyers, but it's interesting that the S-10 name lives.

I liked the Ranger more than the S-10 due to the fact that a 5.0L can be swapped in and pretty much be a factory like install with the use of a Mercury Mariners ECU and wiring harness. I mean who wouldn't love a 5.0L Ranger?

I was born and raised in a city of mostly farmers. So, pretty much everyone had a truck.
In the 90's the favourite truck was the 9th-gen F-series. But the 10th gen pretty much sucked over here (this gen was never available in 4x4 form here).
The F-series flop made people buy their new favourite one: The S10! And it was so until the Hilux N70 came along. Which sold A LOT. Still sells a lot, people never considered them really, but it was a great truck and one of the first ones with a decent auto tranny. The Ranger over here was a choice of many, but was never the favorite.
When the Amarok came everyone was kind of hesitant to buy VW's first attempt at a truck, and preferred to wait (others waited for the Amarok, but it took them over a year to bring the AT, making people buy more Hiluxes over that year). Then the new S10 came. It's currently selling twice as much as the Ranger (but the Hilux is right there, about 15% less than the S10).

I'd like to point out that a SBC is basically as east to install in an S-10

With all the same factory motor mounts and subframe connectors and ECU and wiring harness? The 5.0L swap in the ranger is dead simple with no customization needed to wiring nor a custom ECU setup. The factory setup from the Mountaineer (sorry I stated Mariner above. . .) swaps right in with no modifications necessary. It truly is a plug and play swap.

I would give my opinion but I'm too biased

A good percentage of my friends own/have owned Rangers. Reason they said they bought them over the S10 came down to overall build quality and reliability. I guess the GM offerings don't hold together as well as the Fords. (also, considering they haven't made the S10 in about a decade it's easier to find a newer, cleaner Ranger)

Go off road without the frame breaking.

Thanks! My dad had it for years. But now it's been swapped for one my sister got me at the local short track. She went to a monster jam event and a handful of drivers signed it. My truck's been blessed by monster truck drivers.
